Change:

own_window_transparent yes
#own_window_argb_visual yes
#own_window_argb_value 255

To:

own_window_transparent no
own_window_argb_visual yes
own_window_argb_value 145 # semi-transparent

At least this worked for my conky display:

Conky script

In comments it was asked to share my conky script. It was just changed a couple days ago so Iโ€™ve updated the .gif above and included the edited (stripped out experimental code /comments) script below:

# November 16, 2014 copied from 081114 version written for Core 2 Duo @ 2 Ghz
# and modified for i-7 Quad Core 3630 QM @ 3.4 Ghz with 8 cores @1920x1080 again.
# Adapt for grey-scale snow-leopard wallpaper.
# Adapt for USB thumb-drive with Sparky Linux.

# September 10, 2016 Now on Ubuntu 16.04, Kernel 4.7.3 and after many glitches such
# as suspend/resume, thin fonts in Nautilus, constant Intel Turbo Boost (more heat)
# and sound going to Built-In audio instead of TV repairs, the heat in thermal zones
# 0 and 1 which conky uses are wrong after resume so use thermal zone 2 instead.

Please keep in mind conky scripts change frequently depending on what project you are working on. Two days ago the focus was Why is internet upload so high when I don't actually upload much? and I added the network bandwidth real time display section. As such you may see conky displays posted by me in other questions that donโ€™t reflect the code as of today (September 5, 2017).

Conky Script Revision for comments

Sarah mentioned temperature wasnโ€™t working. Search for ${hwmon 2 temp 1} and replace it with ${hwmon 0 temp 1}.

She also mentioned networking wasnโ€™t working. Search for eth0 and replace it with your network interface name. To find your network interface name use:

$ ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
2: enp59s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
3: wlp60s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000

In my case #2 is the Ethernet interface name and #3 is the Wifi interface name.

If you are using vnStat you can get a list of Network interface names it is monitoring:
